In the footsteps of saints - Spiritual tour to St. Anthony and St. Paul monasteries

Unparalleled hiking opportunities in this magical neighborhood, where the rocky desert mountains rise into the skies. We can fly back into the age and look into a world reminiscent of the past that is still alive today, and with the tales of monks we can expect complete spiritual recharge, even if we are not religious. It captivates me every time, and I feel it sometimes, if only for a few days, but I want to move in and recharge with the spiritual peace one can get there.

If you’re already past the cultural recharge of Luxor and Cairo, but still want to experience another experience, or if you toss up beach sunbathing and Red Sea cruising with a little cultural seasoning, let’s cut into it!

The monasteries of St. Anthony and St. Paul are among the oldest Christian monasteries; both AD. It was built in the 4th century when monks began to settle in the hidden rocks and caves at the foot of Gala Al-Kiblya Mountain on the Red Sea.Both monasteries are among the holiest sites of the Egyptian Coptic Church. Therefore, it is not allowed to visit the holy feasts of the Copts!

St. Anthony's Monastery is approx. It is 320 km away. The monastery is a large, high-walled structure in which churches, chapels, a functioning bakery, a wonderful garden, an oasis - a spring that still works today and offers drinking fresh water - together offering a stunning view. They all praise the father of monastism, St. Anthony. Much has changed since the 4th century. after only a few hermits hid here among these rocks.

Upon arrival, if we have collected enough energy, we can start the approx. 1158 steps, that when we reach the top of the mountain, we surrender ourselves to the sight unfolding at our feet, which is made even more magical by the rays of the rising and perching sun on the mountain. The buildings hidden between the barren peaks and the lush palm trees surrounding them offer a stunning view.

Those lucky enough to get to the top can see St. Anthony’s Cave. But don’t be saddened by those who can’t climb the mountain, it’s a unforgettable experience for them to see the church carved into the Rock, however, please don’t disturb the morning prayer with speech and a flash of cameras!

The program continues with a tour of the rest of the monastery, led by local monks. Within the magical walls, we can get away from everyday life, get rid of our worries, dripping back into the centuries past. If we are lucky, only the ‘silent prayers’ of the monks outside of us will break the silence so that we can truly be recharged with the energy that surrounds us.

In order not to leave empty-handed, it is also possible to make small purchases in the monks 'shop, for example, to take a bottle of the monks' wine.

Continuing our journey on the way back between the Galala Al-Kibliya Mountains, we reach St. Paul's Monastery, also built in the 4th century by hermits who wanted to break away from the material world, in exactly the same place where St. Paul lived for 90 years. in a cave. Within the walls of the monastery, local monks will tell us about their lives. It is impossible to tell and convey the experiences with pictures, you have to experience it for yourself.
